"Detroit 1-8-7"

I love being in Detroit and I know how beautiful the city is but somehow not everyone sees what I see. Especially after a new television show called "Detroit 1-8-7" begins on ABC in the fall. Detroit already has bad connotations connected to it and this T.V. show makes the city look more dangerous than people already believe it to be. On the positive side, it brings more money to the city and the people living in it. Extras are locals and I even had the chance to be on the set when they were recording in Hamtramck this weekend. Though I do not like how this may make our city appear to others, it was really exciting to be on the set! I hope they portray the positive parts of Detroit as well, so the world can see how great of a city we live in.

It's The Weekend, Lets EAT & Have Fun!

Have a BBQ and give your taste-buds a treat with a "Detroit Spice Company" gift pack! You can purchase each flavor separately for $6 or buy the gift pack for $32. Flavors include: Detroit Steak Seasoning, Detroit Jerk Seasoning, Detroit Barbecue Rub, Detroit Greektown Seasoning, Detroit Mexicantown Seasoning and their Detroit Middle Eastern Seasoning. Search for locations near you that sell "Detroit Spice Company" products or buy from their site online.

Not really wanting to cook this weekend? Try visiting Park Bar and the Bucharest Grill. The Bucharest Grill makes the best Chicken Shawarma I have ever tasted. If you're not sure what it is, it's a Middle Eastern sandwich/wrap that's filled with lettuce, tomato, pickles, chicken and then coated with garlic sauce. The of course make a veggie Shawarma too along with tons of other great treat. Their fries are amazing as well!

Detroit Revamped!

The above slideshow features images of the College for Creative Studies. The college consists of two campuses, one located in Midtown and the other in New Center. The college roughly spent $145,000,000 renovating New Centers historic Argonaut building. In fall of 2009, the new campus (after being abandoned since 1999) opened as Taubmen Center for Design. Now a powerhouse for creativity, students can start their early elementary years in the Taubmen Center and continue through to their masters without having to leave the school.

The Taubmen Center isn't the only Detroit asset undergoing a facelift, this year $825,000,000 will be spent on five major projects.

The projects include:
71 Garfield - $6,000,000 (Completed)
Dequindre Cut Extension - $1,000,000 (Completed)
Detroit Medical Center Expansion - $800,000,000 (Construction)
Midtown Loop Greenway - $8,000,000 (Construction)
New Center Intermodal Station - $10,000,000 (Construction)

2009 Projects - $483,000,000
2008 Projects - $1,380,800,000
2007 Projects - $1,140,300,000
2006 Projects - $592,470,000
2005 Projects - $543,600,000

Have Yourself A Homemade Movie Weekend!

I have become fascinated with the amount of movies that are filming in and around the Detroit area the last couple of years. Due to a tax-credit plan created by Governor Jennifer Granholm, Michigan offers the most generous film incentives to the industry. In the two years since the film incentives has been available, 89 movies and television shows have been filmed in Michigan. It excites me to see places I'm familiar with (in Detroit) showing up in movies. I was very disappointed when I grew older and realized that none of the buildings in RoboCop existed in the city of Detroit. I researched it a bit more and found out that most of the movie was filmed in Dallas, Texas. Apparently Dallas was more futuristic looking than Detroit and was more of what they were looking for. Check out some of the movies I have listed below if you're looking for something more ... homemade.

MOVIES FILMED IN OR NEAR DETROIT, MICHIGAN

2009
Hung (Television Show)
Youth In Revolt
Whip It
The Job
Up In The Air (Parts were filmed outside of Michigan)
Prayers For Bobby
The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations

2008
Stick It In Detroit
The Tower
Grand Torino
Killshot (Parts were filmed outside of Michigan)

2002
8 Mile (Parts were filmed outside of Michigan)

IN PROGRESS OR COMING THIS YEAR

SCREAM 4 2011
RED DAWN 2010
LOCKED IN A ROOM 2010
CONVICTION 2010

These are just a few of the movies and there are plenty others having pieces of detroit in them like: RoboCop (Most of it was filmed in Dallas), Grosse Point Blank, Transformers and The Island, Assault on Precinct 13...You can even have the chance to be a move extra by visiting the MichiganActing.com web site!
